This is a great summary and analysis of a vexing problem for many colleges and their students. I've contended for years that not everyone should go to college, mostly for the reasons you adduce here. For those who do--especially first-gen, adult learners, and disadvantaged students--much more should be done to provide appropriate support for them and, often, for their families. Institutions should also be much more savvy about curricular and credential innovation, especially if they hope to meet the needs of those who come to higher education later or who resume progress toward a degree.
